Often times when we want to get in shape, we think that simply doing some basic weight lifting or going for runs are all we need, and in a strict sense, that is mostly true. The problem, however, is that most of us have gotten so out of touch with our bodies that we have forgotten how to properly move our bodies in the first place. Thus, at best, we don’t see results when we exercise, and at worst, we get injured.

The solution, therefore, is to learn what our bodies are naturally made for and then to do it in order to achieve optimal health and fitness. So, it’s unwise to simply go for runs or go to the gym without proper instruction or knowledge of how your body is made to move because you may very well be exercising with the bad movement patterns that have come from, say, sitting at a desk for eight hours per day and which will, in time, injure you.

In order to learn how to properly use your body, one of the best things you can do is, well, the opposite of what most trainers and physical therapists teach; that is, instead of doing 2-3 sets of all sorts of exercises, do instead 10, 15 or even 20 sets of only a few exercises, and, in each set, be highly mindful and aware of your body and of all aspects of the movement. Be aware of how your body is affected in every inch of the exercise and let your body make the natural adjustments it wants to make. The more you do this, the more in tune you’ll become with your body and the more you’ll master each exercise, just like a violist or pianist masters proper technique with his or her instrument.

And, just like every other skill, mastery usual comes when there is a master for the pupil. It’s for this reason that Matrix Fitness and Spa offers the high-quality personal training that it does. Don’t hesitate to sign up for a free fitness consultation from the new Fitness Director – yours truly – who can teach you how to use your body in the way it’s meant to be used.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Benjamin has a degree in philosophy and psychology and has trained literally hundreds of people with health and fitness goals ranging from weight loss to rehabilitation from even the most severe injuries and physiological problems. He has enabled his clients to lose 60 pounds of fat, gain 30 pounds of muscle, recover from knee, shoulder, back, hip, and foot problems, and even regain the ability to walk after suffering a stroke.

Because of Benjamin’s complex joint and anatomical issues – namely scoliosis and clavicles that are about half as long as they should be (a very rare condition called cleidocranial dysplasia) – he suffered serious injuries in his younger years despite guidance from trainers, physical therapists, and doctors, many of whom actually caused him even more injury. After being falsely told he was beyond hope for recovery, he researched and experimented with various training methods and exercises – one of which was meditation after living in a Zen monastery – until he healed his body on his own. Doing so gave him a knowledge base that has enabled him to not only restore clients to their regular functioning before their injuries but to also attain a degree of wellness and performance previously unknown to them.

Benjamin’s goal for his clients is to make them masters of their own health, and if you consistently follow Benjamin’s instruction, you may very well come out of your training not just in better shape but fundamentally changed for the rest of your life. He is a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Corrective Exercise Specialist and Fitness Nutrition Specialist. His areas of specialization include Rehabilitation, Weight Loss, Bodybuilding, Strength Building, Minimalist/Barefoot Running and Mindfulness.
